For three decades, Vaux’s swifts have returned to Chapman Elementary School, making the Northwest Portland spot their designated roost and offering their nightly swirling performance for thousands of onlookers below. This year, the chimney stands empty. The show, it seems, has moved on from Chapman – at least for now. Read more here: https://theoregonian.visitlink.me/sNNs6G 📸 Abigail Landwehr | The Oregonian

The Vaux's swifts presented a spectacular display at the Agate Hall chimney last night. Observers from CCBA, along with approximately 100 individuals, witnessed over 5,000 swifts entering the chimney for nocturnal roosting during their southern migration. EDIT: These are Vaux's swifts, not bats! They have been utilizing this chimney for decades during their spring and fall migrations. | Coast to Cascades Bird Alliance

A flock of around 4,000 Vaux’s Swifts were captured swirling above a church steeple in Salem, Oregon, before pouring into the chimney like smoke running in reverse. It’s part of the birds’ nightly roosting ritual as they cling to the brick inside. (via: David P. Craig via Storyful) #viral
